contents: This map shows per province the percentage of brides and grooms able to sign their marriage certificate between 1813-1819. The differences between the Protestant north and the Roman Catholic south are conspicuous. Apart from a greater economic prosperity one of the major causes was that Protestant education had from the beginning emphasised the ability to independently read the Bible and other religious and moralistic writings. This was not considered important in the south. On the contrary, it might interfere with the existing balance of power.
