contents: The building on the left dates from 1517 and was used by the archers: it was called the Handboogdoelen (Longbow Shooting Range) and also known as De Grote Doelen (The Great Shooting Range) or the `Garnalendoelen'. From 1862, it housed the Municipal Library of Amsterdam which from 1877 also became the University Library. In 1880 the building was designated for this library only. The two adjacent premises only became part of the history of the University Library in the 20th century: the Bushuis or Militia Building from 1606 (middle) was added in phases to the University Library between 1936 and 1957, while on the site of St. Catharine's church (right) the present main building was established (in use since 1967).
