contents: The gilding of the edges is being done here in the same way as in previous centuries. The book is clamped in a hand press between two planks. The edge is made smooth, rubbed off and brushed with thinned albumen. The binder then applies the gold leaf. When everything is dry the gold is burnished so that the gilded edge has a nice, deep shine.
