contents: This binding on a Lutheran bible is the only known example of an edge decoration where the gilding is applied to a somewhat fanned out book block. Only if the book is fanned out again can the illustration be seen properly. The illustration is of the prophet Jeremiah in a landscape where an almond branch descends from heaven.
