(uitgever/publisher) year: 1844 type: illustratie illustration detail: nee dimensions: 7,7 x 14,2 cm. related terms: druktechnieken gravure graveren period: 19e eeuw classification: E: Boekillustratie contents: The first training school in the Netherlands for wood engravers was established in 1840. The wood engraving is, like the woodcut, a form of relief printing, with the major difference that the wood engraving was made on the crosscut and not lengthways in hardwood such as, for example, palm wood. It was a pioneering illustrative technique because a skilled wood engraver could achieve a high degree of detail and accuracy. The wood engraving school in The Hague trained a number of successful engravers but did not last long: the school was closed in 1849. origineel: source: Geïllustreerde courant / red.: W.J.A.
