contents: In 1478 the first printed edition in Dutch by Geraert Leeu of Gouda appeared of the 'Legenda Aurea' or 'Gulden legende', a compilation of medieval hagiographies written by the Dominican Jacobus van Varazzo (or Jacobus de Voragine), archbishop of Genoa, who died in 1298. The 'Legenda Aurea' was widely disseminated in the western Christian world: there are about 90 editions known from the 15th century. This title page is typical of such incunabula: author, main title, place or year of publication are not mentioned. The woodcut represents Mary with, above her head, the Holy Spirit. She is surrounded by the twelve Apostles.
