contents: Nowhere in Europe are so many paintings and prints with books on them as in the Dutch Republic, but that a book could also be mis-used is apparent from this picture and the accompanying text from the popular emblem book Sinnepoppen (emblems) by Roemer Visscher. The reader is warned against the `betweter' (know-all) , someone who reads the 'writings the wrong way' in order to hurt the other with improper arguments.
