contents: Blind- and gold-tooled binding of purple shagreen. Both covers have a neo-baroque decoration. The flat spine has a continuous Gothic-Revival decoration. Reverting to past styles is a typical 19th-century phenomenon. Around 1845 shagreen became fashionable for luxury bindings, just like saffian leather with an artificial striping. Saffian has small even stripes, shagreen has small 'dots'.
