contents: Commercial shop libraries had always had a fairly dubious reputation. As they were not subsidised like public libraries and owners had to earn their living from them, they mostly offered light reading aimed at a general and not too demanding public. Nevertheless, they were initially a form of competition for the public libraries. Here is a shop library in the 1970s which is doomed to fail and which has a range aimed at a female public.
