contents: The demand in the countryside for reading material grew at the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, in 1903, in the village of Uffelte in Drente, the mobile library was established after an idea by the local teacher, Berend Bijmholt (1864-1947). In 1905, the Maatschappij tot Nut voor het Algemeen (Society for public welfare) started distributing books but this task was taken over in 1920 by a separate organisation set up for this purpose: the Centrale Vereeniging voor Reizende Bibliotheken in Broek in Waterland. From here hundreds of boxes of books were sent to contact points in the countryside. This national organisation ensured that reading was greatly encouraged in the countryside, especially in the winter months.
