contents: In the 19th century there was a long search for an alternative to the time-consuming and therefore fairly expensive wood engraving. Experiments were conducted all over Europe in a search for ways to make mechanical blocks (metal relief forms). In the Netherlands, Anthony Binger obtained a patent in 1849 for his 'glyphography'. In this complicated illustration technique a representation was drawn using a needle on a treated copper plate. On this plate, made conductive with graphite, a relief form was then formed in a galvanic bath through precipitation.
