contents: The original furniture of the Enkhuizen librije (library) probably dates to 1628: tall wooden bookcases with a fixed slanting reading shelf which allowed - just as in the librije of Zutphen but different from the Leiden University Library - consultation of the books while sitting on a seat. Even in 1657 the books were anchored by chains to prevent theft. In 1838 the librije in the Grote Kerk in Hoorn was lost through fire. In Enkhuizen it was then decided to free the books from their chains, so that they might be taken away quickly in case of emergency.
