contents: Binding of brown calf , gold-tooled and painted with enamel paint in various colours. Christopher Plantin, born around 1520 in France, began his career as a bookbinder and achieved great professional fame. Around 1550 he introduced gold-tooling in Antwerp, a technique he had learned in Paris and which was also to be applied on a large scale in the Northern Netherlands. In 1555, when an accident made binding impossible for him, Plantin started printing books.
