contents: A papermaker is making hand-made paper from pulp, consisting of finely ground rags mixed with water. In the period up to 1585, no paper was made in the present-day Netherlands and only to a very limited extent in the Southern Netherlands. This meant that all paper had to be imported. Most of it came from the north-east of France, but paper was also imported from Germany and Italy, albeit sparsely.
